The Importance of Living a Life of Purpose

Does your life have meaning?

Of course it does! That is why so many people were driven to read Rick Warren's, A Purpose-Driven Life. And public records show, there are over ten million books sold! That's a lot of people interested in purpose. At some point, people come to ask themselves the question, "why am I here?" This happens at crossroads in life. The thought can be triggered by a divorce, break up, imprisonment, or loss. When you look ahead and do not see yourself achieving a goal that you set for yourself because of constant setbacks, you may begin to question meaning and purpose.

Today, I want to encourage you to accept that you were created for a purpose. Your life has meaning for your assignment in the earth. Now ask yourself, "who or what is my assignment"?

Your assignment is not all about you

Have you wondered why you are going through so much in your life? Why did your child go to prison when you worked hard to give him a good education, although divorced, you shared custody with his father so he could have both parents in his life, but it happened anyway? Maybe you went through a medical problem, financial struggle, or a loss of someone close to you. Whatever your life experience has been, know that it was not all for nothing. Think about the darkest moments of your experiences, and how you thought you couldn't make it, but did. That experience was to build you for your purpose.

Think about it. How beneficial is it to your Creator for you to have been born just to go to work, raise a family or pick up a hobby that only benefits yourself? What good is it if you run yourself into the ground trying to make ends meet? How does God get the glory in that? Although noble, it is not enough to say that you lived your life working to put food on the table and a roof over everyone's head, but never lived out the call on your life, or never shared your God-given gifts with the world. Someone is in need of your testimony. There is another who will walk the road you conquered but will struggle far worse than you without a navigational guide.

Your resilience is something to be shared with that woman or man who is about to go down the same road.

I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord

Confusion, worry, doubt, and anxiety may grip you making it difficult to see the path to purpose God laid out for you. Honestly, you just might be on that past, but it feels off. It doesn't appear to be taking you toward success, peace, joy, or comfort. Instead, the road has many curves, bumps, and cracks in the pavement that make it difficult to securely take the next step.

Don't become distracted by the uneasiness of the path. Stay focused on the promises of God and remain obedient to His Word. Remember that Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) tells us that God knows the thoughts He thinks towards us. Specifically, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end". Many translate this scripture as God knows the plans He has for you [us].

The long and the short of it is that God has revealed Himself as all-knowing in the scriptures and even admonishes us to be still and just know that He is who He says He is. He is the good shepherd that will satisfy our thirst and will comfort us with His rod and staff as told to us in Psalm 23:4. For us, God's Holy Spirit guides us. This was God's plan. Through Christ, we were given the gift of salvation and a comforter to help us along the way.

God's plan is not to harm us, but to give us a future and a hope.
